Things to do in Port Lincoln
Wilderness Wanders Joey Wander

If you are looking for things to do in Port Lincoln... you've found it!

Just a 40 minute flight from Adelaide with airport transfer available.

Wander's mother was an unfortunate fatality case after a road accident.

She was brought to us by a caring couple who checked her Mum's pouch after the accident and removed her for a second chance of life. As Phil and I are known native animal rescuers we regularly adopt these endearing little critters and finally release them on our tree studded rural property when they have become independent at around one year old.

Wander currently requires around the clock attention and four hourly bottle feeds. She hangs snuggly in her recycled woolen blanket pouch that we have made especially for her, but prefers to be cuddled for extra comfort.

As Wander grows we will be posting regular updates on her progress and covering her major milestones.

So remember to keep checking back.

Accompanying us on our 4wd and walking adventures keeps Wander in constant contact with us and helps her gain confidence and social skills. Guests are intrigued to learn about the intricacies of rescuing techniques and often sign up in their local towns to become native animal carers after experiencing the wonderfully rewarding feeling of helping such a magnificent animal.

Wander is becoming Miss Independent January 2010
Our little madam deserves to be sashed Miss Independent. We are proud of her progress, even though she gets into tantrums at times. When out and about on our daily adventures Wander always accompanies us and loves not only the bumpy ride in the 4wd but the wonderful places we explore. Wander always has the chance to have a jump around and discover the taste of the bush, but often now when it's time to go she throws a little tantrum to let us know she is not quite ready. After a quick kick and splutter to show us she has a mind of her own, she snuggles back down into her pouch and enjoys a cuddle while we make our way to the next ( just as amazingly ) scenic stop. Wander is full of personality and we love to see her growing independent.
Wander is growing stubborn and mischievous. November 2009

With both strong teeth and determination Wander is chewing herself a life of discovery. Curious to see smell and taste everything in her surrounds she even tries to eat the farm dog food and mixes it down with a little cardboard now and again.

Wander continues to be fed on special Kangaroo milk formula and is offered only fresh and natural foods which she loves to graze throughout the day. Just like a young child though, if it is out of bounds, Wander wants it on the menu!

Wander's Daily Routine Update ... July 2009

Wander is currently bottle fed 4 hourly on a speciality kangaroo milk formula which is bought in powder form.

Her milk needs to be gently heated and when being fed out on tour, Wander's bottle is kept on ice and heated when required from our morning tea thermos.

As a kangaroo mother produces varying strengths of milk according to the age and needs of her joey we adjust Wander's formula carefully using guidelines from years of trusted research.

The teat used on Wander's bottle also must change in shape as she grows to mimic the changes in the natural pouch.

These formulas and teats are all now available from our local veterinary stores.

After each feed Wander needs to be "toileted" which again involves mimicking the natural mother's behavior in the pouch.

A kangaroo mother must stimulate the joey by licking to encourage the young to defecate, with this action she is able to keep the pouch clean. As a young joey does not naturally leave the pouch for several months, rescue carers like our selves take on a big commitment and regularly toileting with a soft tissue is the only way to keep our joeys truly healthy.

When Wander is not being either fed or toileted she can be found snuggling in her pouch, which consists of a pillow case followed by a small woolen blanket bag which lines her hanging cotton carry bag.

Wander accompanies us wherever we go. While in the car Wander's bag hangs over the back of the driver's seat unless she's being cuddled by an adoring guest. While at home her bag hangs in whichever room we occupy.

During walking adventures Wander loves to snuggle inside Phil's back pack and enjoys the closeness, warmth and constant movement that this provides.

If Wander feels upset she lets us know with a short and surprisingly loud barking noise which is best described as sounding like a husky cough! Not the sound you would probably expect from such a cutey!

Sunday Mail AFTA Holiday Expo

After being brought to us since being orphaned, Kevin arrived at one of our busiest periods when Phil was busy running tours and I was due to drive to Adelaide for the AFTA Holiday Expo. Bringing him along was the only option and the wonderful team at Turnstyles Exhibitions & Events and visiting public to the highly informative and inspiring expo welcomed Kevin with open arms. He soaked up the attention and took the constant action in his stride. Needless to say Kevin now has a growing fan club of admirers.

Thanks for being so caring everyone. Kevin is thriving and settling in well.
