Wander is currently bottle fed 4 hourly on a speciality kangaroo milk formula which is bought in powder form.
Her milk needs to be gently heated and when being fed out on tour, Wander's bottle is kept on ice and heated when required from our morning tea thermos.
As a kangaroo mother produces varying strengths of milk according to the age and needs of her joey we adjust Wander's formula carefully using guidelines from years of trusted research.
The teat used on Wander's bottle also must change in shape as she grows to mimic the changes in the natural pouch.
These formulas and teats are all now available from our local veterinary stores.
After each feed Wander needs to be "toileted" which again involves mimicking the natural mother's behavior in the pouch.
A kangaroo mother must stimulate the joey by licking to encourage the young to defecate, with this action she is able to keep the pouch clean. As a young joey does not naturally leave the pouch for several months, rescue carers like our selves take on a big commitment and regularly toileting with a soft tissue is the only way to keep our joeys truly healthy.
When Wander is not being either fed or toileted she can be found snuggling in her pouch, which consists of a pillow case followed by a small woolen blanket bag which lines her hanging cotton carry bag.
Wander accompanies us wherever we go. While in the car Wander's bag hangs over the back of the driver's seat unless she's being cuddled by an adoring guest. While at home her bag hangs in whichever room we occupy.
During walking adventures Wander loves to snuggle inside Phil's back pack and enjoys the closeness, warmth and constant movement that this provides.
If Wander feels upset she lets us know with a short and surprisingly loud barking noise which is best described as sounding like a husky cough! Not the sound you would probably expect from such a cutey! |
