Latest Weather?

Any day is a great day on the Eyre Peninsula or Flinders Ranges. Sun Rain & Shine all bring with them special delights. Each of our tours has been specially planned to provide maximum comfort in all weather and only in extreme conditions would we need to cancel.

Check Out Willy Weather for the latest forecasts.

The weather of Lower Eyre Peninsula is generally mild, it’s proximity to the sea having a moderating effect.
Winter temperatures rarely drop below ten degrees during the day and nights rarely fall to freezing. Summer temperature can rise above forty degrees on a couple of days a year, but this is rare. Generally sea breezes make coastal walking in summer a pleasant experience.

The majority of our approximately 500mm of annual rain falls in winter, although rain is a possibility at any time. Rain during a walk is not a problem if you are carrying a good waterproof jacket. In fact, rain makes the colours and smells of the bush come alive, and re-freshens and cleanses. The backpacks supplied are waterproof.

We insist on all participants wearing wide brimmed hats and long sleeve shirts to protect from the sun. Sunscreen will be provided and regular application encouraged.
Walks can be cancelled when the temperature is forecast to rise above thirty six degrees. In this case, walks will be re-scheduled, an alternative four wheel drive adventure offered, or money refunded.

Child Friendly?

Absolutely! We love to have the company of the enquiring mind and our guides have all the patience in the world to answer the whys and hows of your child.

Booster seats and child restraints are available in accordance to current new laws. Please let us know on booking of your requirements.

The Coffin Bay Caravan Park and McKecknie Springs Farm Stay Park are wonderful accommodation options for guests travelling with pets.

Special Dietary Needs?

Most of our tours include delicious local foods and refreshments. We consider enjoying local foods is part of the journey. Please let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements and we will make sure your needs are catered for.

Fitness:

Walking:

Our tours offer a ‘soft approach’ to the usually energetic pastime of bushwalking. Daily distances are kept low, minimal equipment needs to be carried, and camp is more luxurious than usual for a bushwalk.

However it must be realised that a certain level of effort is still required, and that walking is sometimes over rough stony ground or soft sand, and that camping in tents and sleeping bags is involved.
Some walks, such as the Whaler’s Cliff Top Wander, involve walking off track. Although the scrub is usually low and not thick, scratches from vegetation can still occur.

Anybody of average fitness should be able to easily take part in any of our walks. It is recommended that participants do a couple of training walks beforehand. We cover an average of about 6 kilometres per day, a distance most people find easily manageable with several rest stops and a slow pace, though still challenging.

4WDing:

All of our tours are especially designed to be suitable for the non athletic with no special fitness requirements. Your tour vehicle is a luxury model Nissan Patrol with leather seats and full air conditioning. We have low steps to assist vehicle entry and a very helpful and understanding guide.

Disabled or Special Access?

Your tour vehicle can store wheelchairs, although guests requiring lifting will need a carer present. Most tours are suitable for those using walking frames or with limited mobility and tours can be adapted to suit your specific needs.

Tag Along Tours?

While we do not offer 4WD tag along tours, we do offer 4wd training for those who would like to learn from scratch or brush up on their 4wd skills.

4WD Training?

Training includes 3 main components and is all hands on.

General Vehicle Care: Tyre Pressure, Use of onboard equipment and gauges, tyre changes and routine maintenance.

Vehicle Handling: Unsurfaced roads, driving in sand, high and low range gears and ascending and descending steep inclines.

Vehicle Recovery: Correct recovery equipment to use and choose, vehicle recovery techniqies.

Safety:

We carefully plan all tours for maximum safety, however some elements are beyond our control. Our tours all have experienced guides, good quality equipment and stringent safety measures in place. It must be remembered however, that we are exploring off road and are exposed to a different set of risks, albeit small ones, to those encountered in everyday life.

Our guides have extensive local knowledge and experience and it is important that their instructions are listened to and carefully followed at all times.

All of our equipment undergoes a regular safety and maintenance check regime.

Guides carry extensive first aid kits and have current senior first aid certification. We also carry a satellite phone to ensure reliable communications at all times, and the latest GPS (global satellite positioning) receivers.

Tours are often over rough, stony ground or through loose sand, so adequate footwear is important. Some walking, particularly on the Whaler’s Cliff Top Wander, can be through low scrub. We provide gaiters which help protect the lower legs.

Walks are specially planned to give a wilderness experience, yet be never far from vehicular access in case of an emergency.

Sandboarding is offered on some four wheel drive tours. Sandboarding does have higher risks, and so any person wishing to partake does so at their own risk and only after signing a waiver.

As beaches are un-patrolled and seas often rough, we do not offer or suggest swimming as a suitable activity. Any swimming will be entirely at your own risk.

All participants in walks will need to sign a waiver to show their understanding that some inherent risks are involved and that each participant is responsible for their own safety.
