Day 1: With pick up from your accommodation in Adelaide we begin the journey to the beautiful Flinders Ranges via South Australia's famous wine growing region Clare Valley. Enter the Flinders Ranges at the quaint historic town of Melrose situated at the base of Mount Remarkable. Next is the town of Quorn, famed for the beautifully restored Pich Richi Railway. Travelling north we stop to see ancient aboriginal rock paintings at Yourumbulla Cave, then Hawker, a once important stop on the old Ghan Railway line. From here we enter the highest section of the Flinders, as we drive under towering ramparts of ancient rock. Reaching Wilpena Pound, we go on a short scenic flight that shows the incredible perfect bowl shape and vastness of the Pound. Afterwards is a chance to stretch your legs with a short walk to the old homestead and lookout inside the pound. You will enjoy the wonderful resort accommodation tonight with only the sound of the ranges to lull you to sleep. |

Day 2: This morning we leave Wilpena and travel north to the breathtaking ruggedness of Arkaroola, a privately owned sanctuary and resort. Here we take the world renowned four hour Ridgetop tour, a stunning four wheel drive trip along old mining tracks through the magnificent scenery of the world heritage listed Mount Painter Sanctuary. After dinner join us for an astronomy tour of the area’s stunningly dark night sky at one of Arkaroola’s observatories. Accommodation is in comfortable log cabin units. |

Day 3: Return to Adelaide via the majestic Brachina and Bunyeroo gorges of the central Flinders. Here we follow creeks that have cut through hundreds of millions of years of rock layers, many containing a variety of fossil life, including the world famous Ediacra Fauna, the oldest life on Earth. These gorges are also the stronghold of the rare and beautiful Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby. Return to Adelaide early evening. |
